Kalyan Banerjee accuses CM Suvendu of 'vindictive politics' amid CID's search at TMC central office
Police conducted a search operation at Suruchi Sangha in New Alipore on Tuesday afternoon, bringing arrested Swarup Biswas to the club as part of an ongoing investigation. Before the search began, central security forces cordoned off the club premises and surrounding area. The operation took place amid continuing investigations involving Swarup Biswas, while his brother, former state minister Aroop Biswas, is reported to be absconding.
The search followed growing scrutiny of Suruchi Sangha, a prominent South Kolkata club that has been linked by critics to activities allegedly associated with the Biswas brothers. Public attention on the club intensified after Swarup Biswas was arrested a few days ago in connection with multiple allegations relating to the Tollywood film industry. Investigators carried out the search as part of efforts to gather further information and documents relevant to the case.
Local resentment reportedly escalated after the Trinamool Congress's electoral defeat, culminating in vandalism at the club last Friday. According to allegations made by local residents, protesters broke open locks and entered the premises, where they claimed to have found a luxurious room equipped with a king-size bed, chairs, expensive ceiling fans and an attached bathroom. Residents also alleged that government-supplied bottled drinking water and sarees intended for relief distribution were found inside the club premises.
There are also allegations concerning the ownership of the land on which the club stands, with claims that the property belongs to the Life Insurance Corporation of India. These allegations have further increased public attention on the club and its operations. Authorities have not publicly commented on the claims, which remain part of the broader controversy surrounding the premises.
The latest search comes a day after investigators gained access to a digitally locked room at an apartment linked to Aroop and Swarup Biswas in New Alipore. According to police sources, officers recovered 14 mobile phones, two iPads and a large number of documents from the room. Investigators are examining the electronic devices and records, including documents reportedly linked to Guild activities, while seeking to determine why the items were allegedly stored inside a digitally secured room.
